15.3m Pilothouse Cruising Yacht
Around the world in safety and comfort
This 50' cruising yacht has completed a round the world cruise with a husband and wife team and their young son who has basically grown up on the boat!
The design is reasonably conservative but can sail well and maintain excellent avaerage speeds to cover extensive amounts of ocean in a good time.
Construction is cold moulded NZ Kauri over laminated frames and is very strong and over built through the keel area and has water tight areas in each end of the boat. There has been no strucutral failurse of any kind throughout the trip around the globe and the boat is still in excellent condition after the completion of the voyage.
Set up for a liveaboard life style (obviously) the boat is fitted with a genset, watermaker, washing machine, etc. There are 3 sleeping cabins and two toilet compartments. An unusal feature is the fully operational inside helm station, steering wheel and helm seat with excellent visability through the raised pilothouse windows.
Part of the brief for the desiogn was a desire to go to sea with no extraneous gear lashed or stowed on deck so the boat has a large fore peak and lazarette storage area and also large fuel tanks that give 1200 NM range motoring at 8 knots. Auxilliary engine is 100hp which allows for plenty of reserve power if required.
Sail handling is very simple and safe witha furling mainsail and headsails, the double spreader cutter rig combined with the furling gear makes for a very versatile sail plan which is very important when making ocean passages short handed when optimising the sail plan for speed and safety can be easily handled by one person.
The boat was superbly built by Qualicraft in Auckland.
